2009 Summer Camp

 

  • Summer sessions will begin and end at Northwest Service Academy - Lower Columbia Center. Located at 55 SE Main St. Portland, OR 97214
  • Days are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted in the session description.
  • Before and aftercare is available from 8:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per morning or afternoon; $10 for both. Please indicate on your registration form if you will be signing up for before and after care. Aftercare is not available on Friday afternoons.
  • PEEPs Summer Sessions are for youth ages 10 to 13.
  • There are openings for Junior Camp Counselors for 14 and 15 year olds who have participated with PEEPs in the past. See Additional Programs for more information.
  • PEEPs will provide a snack, water, and transportation throughout the week.
  • PEEPs campers must bring a lunch, appropriate clothing for being outdoors, sun protection, and close-toe shoes.
  • During overnight trips, PEEPs will provide meals on those days. PEEPs campers must still bring a lunch on the first day of the overnight.
  • During overnight trips, PEEPs will provide tents for campers. PEEPs campers must bring their own sleeping bags and warm layers for being outdoors overnight.
  • Space is limited to 20 campers per session.
  • Summer sessions will have a Camper to Counselor ratio of 5:1 to provide a fun and high-quality educational camp.

Session 1: Sense of Place

Dates: June 22 - 27, 2009
Includes 2 Day Overnight: June 25 - 27, 2009
Note: Saturday ends at 12 pm
Cost: $200
 
What do the words "home" and "community" mean to you? How are we connected to our homes and communities, and what makes them special? In this session, PEEPs will gain a deeper sense of where we live and how we are connected to it by exploring local and regional parks, practicing nature awareness, and lending a hand with community projects around Portland. What we know, we will value, and what we value, we will protect.

 

 

 

 

Session 2: Food for Thought

Dates: July 6 - 10, 2009
No Overnight
Cost: $200

 

Why do some people eat three meals a day while others go hungry? Where does the food that we eat come from? What is the difference between organic and non-organic food? In this session, PEEPs will ask these questions and find out what we can do to help those that are hungry. We will be getting our hands dirty at some local farms and community projects to help provide food for all, and see how what we eat affects our bodies and the environment.

 

 

 

 

Session 3: Urban Aventures

Dates: July 13 - 17, 2009
No Overnight
Cost: $200

 

Often we think that we have to leave the city to be in nature, but Portland has more to offer than just roses. In this session, PEEPs will discover the joys and wonders of nature right in our own city. We will explore local parks by foot and the Willamette River by boat. Along the way, we will learn about Portland history, visit cultural sites, and do our part to help Portland be a more beautiful and better place to live for everyone.

 

 

 

 

Session 4: Service for Science

Dates: July 20 - 24, 2009
No Overnight
Cost: $200

 

With the climate and natural environment rapidly changing, scientists are working harder than ever to learn how to protect our planet, and they need our help. In this session, PEEPs will team up with local biologists and naturalists to turn science into action. We will be doing some hands on research in ponds and forests, and putting our brains into action as we investigate the health of our environment, and see what we can do to protect it.

 

 

 

Session 5: Walk on the Wild Side

Dates: July 27 - August 7, 2009
Includes 3 Day Overnight: August 3 - 6, 2009
Note: Saturday, August 1 is a full day. Sunday, August 2 is a day off.
Cost: $400

 

What do the words "wild" and "wilderness" mean to you? Why is wilderness important? How do we affect our wilderness? In this session, PEEPs will gain a greater understanding of wilderness and learn what we can do to protect it. We will begin this 2 week session by exploring some wilderness areas around Portland to learn and practice Leave-No-Trace skills, animal tracking, and wilderness living techniques, The second week will put our practice into action with a 3 day wilderness overnight trip.

 

 

Session 6: It's Easy Being Green

Dates: August 10 -14, 2009
No Overnight
Cost: $200

 

What does it mean to be "Green?" What can I do to save the environment? Protecting our planet can be fun, exciting, and easy. Find out what it means to care for the environment and what we can do to decrease our footprint on this planet. From alternative energy to habitat restoration, PEEPs will explore and participate in fascinating projects that are happening around Portland to protect the Earth.

 

 

 

 

Session 7: Water Wilderness   

Dates: August 17 - 22, 2009
Includes 2 Day Overnight: August 20 - 22, 2009
Note: Saturday ends at 12 pm
Cost: $200

 

Water is a vital resource for all life on Earth. Come discover the incredible journey of water from the heights of the clouds down to the deep blue ocean. In this session, PEEPs will explore local watersheds by foot and by boat, from the Cascade Mountains to the Oregon coast.
