PEEPs 2009 Spring Service Learning Days
PEEPs Summer Junior Camp Counselor Program

9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This will be an exciting day at the coast! PEEPs will be going to Ecola State Park, which is just north of Cannon Beach. We will partner with volunteers from Oregon State Park to spot Gray Whales on their northbound migration. Gray Whales are known to come in close to beaches to feed on the rich sources of food found close to shore and inside coves. We will also be participating with SOLV's Great Beach Cleanup to help keep our oceans healthy. Join PEEPs on this day to enjoy the beauty that the Oregon coast has to offer, and do our part to keep the oceans and beaches clean and healthy.
8:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This will be a great day to get outside, learn about native species and how to plant them. PEEPs will be going to Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge, located 10 miles east of Vancouver, WA. This is an important habitat for migrating birds and salmon. We will begin the day by working with the Lower Columbia River Estuary Partnership to restore native habitat. Afterwards, we will spend time hiking through the refuge to see the wildlife that it supports.

9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
PEEPs will be going to Oxbow Regional Park, located just east of Portland in the Sandy River Gorge. Oxbow supports a wide variety of wildlife including beaver, deer, salmon, songbirds and birds of prey. We'll spend part of the day viewing wildlife, paying special attention to learning how to identify different types of birds. We will also participate in a service project to keep this local park clean and healthy.

9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This will be another great day to go to the Oregon coast to spot the Gray Whale migration. Gray Whales spend winters in the warm lagoons of Baja, Mexico to give birth and then travel north to the Bering Sea to feed. About 200 Gray's stay along the Oregon and Washington coasts to feed. Join PEEPs at the beach to watch for Gray's, hike along the beaches, and do our part to keep the ocean and beaches clean and healthy.

9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
PEEPs will be heading into the Columbia Gorge to help restore native habitat on the Mosier Plateau. We will be working with Friends of the Columbia Gorge to protect this amazing area. This ecosystem, just a few miles east of Hood River is special because it is the transistional zone between Oregon's temperate rainforest and the high desert to the east. The Columbia River Gorge is home to hundreds of native wildflowers and flowering shrubs, some of which can only be found in the Gorge. We'll spend the day hiking in the Gorge, enjoying the views and wildflowers, and making room for native species by removing invasive plants.
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
PEEPs will be going to Sauvie Island to work with Food Works Farm. Food Works is a program that provides teenagers with job and business skills through growing and selling vegetables at the Portland Farmer's Market. Food Works also provides fresh produce for people in the community that are in need. Join PEEPs in this beautiful area just outside of Portland as we learn about local food, vegetable gardening, and help provide fresh food for all.
During camp, Jr. Camp counselors will have set responsibilities, and will learn from our camp counselors what it is like to monitor and teach students in a large setting. These responsibilities include assisting camp staff in games and activities throughout the day, acting as co-pilots to our counselors while driving in PEEPs vehicles, as well as being part of a feedback loop to PEEPs staff members. While we request that Jr. Camp Counselors fulfill their daily responsibilities, we also want them to have fun and learn at camp. We will provide opportunities to learn new skills, but also allow them to still be a camper in our program.
We want students to grow as much as possible this summer, and we will request that they work hard. The first thing we ask from Jr. Camp Counselors is that they participate in an interview, and that they can explain why they are interested in being a part of this new program. Once Jr. Camp Counselors have completed their summer camp experience they will be equipped to take on leadership roles in high school, and they can write about PEEPs on their resume, better preparing them for the work field.
If you are interested in the PEEPs Jr. Camp Counselor program, please contact PEEPs staff directly to set up an interview.
