The PEEPs Mission

PEEPs works with local youth to engage them in their community and build environmental consciousness through service-learning and immersion experience.

History

PEEPs is a program of Northwest Service Academy’s (NWSA) Lower Columbia Center. NWSA is proud to announce that PEEPs has been developed by a team of NWSA AmeriCorps members that have combined their expertise, energy, and research to provide this first summer production of the Portland Environmental Engagement Program.

Northwest Service Academy began in 1994 as an AmeriCorps program. Since 1994, more than a thousand NWSA members have served in the environmental community of Oregon and Washington.

The original idea of a summer camp for the Lower Columbia Center (LCC) came primarily from Center Director Ernie Guerrero. While with a former program, Ernie witnessed the unique and powerful learning and mentoring experience that comes into play when college-aged adults (AmeriCorps members) work closely with youth in a day camp setting.

With the help and creative energy of additional LCC staff members, Lara Jones and Margi Guilfoyle, the idea grew into a plan. Credit for this initial pilot of the PEEPs program development goes almost entirely to the team of incredibly talented LCC AmeriCorps members that have worked extremely hard and long to bring PEEPs to your child. We look forward to giving your child one of the best summer experience of his or her life!
